After doing some research on the web and looking through several books (which I will list below). I have finally put together yet another collection of pictures from LIFE magazine by photographers who I think have contributed in shaping photojournalism as we know it today.

“I see pictures all the time,” Eisenstaedt once said. He saw a picture this night, as an audience awaited an opening night performance at the famed La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy. Eisenstaedt was looking about and shooting when “suddenly I saw a lovely young society girl sitting next to an empty box. From that box, I took another picture, with the girl in the foreground. For years and years, this has been one of my prize photographs. Without the girl I would not have had a memorable picture.”

Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (23 February 1878 – 15 May 1935) was a painter, art theoretician, pioneer of geometric abstract art and one of the most important members of the Russian avant-garde. He was also the founder of the art movement Suprematism.

Suprematism is an art movement founded by Malevich in Russia which focused on geometrical abstraction that evokes emotion and contemplation. Malevich himself describes this revolutionary art movement as “the supremacy of pure feeling in creative art.”

When Stalinism took hold in the Soviet Union from 1924 on, the Stalinist regime began limiting the freedom of artists and prohibited abstraction and divergence of any artistic expression. This of course led to the confiscation of many of Malevich’s work, and he was banned from creating and exhibiting similar art. Malevich nevertheless retained his main conception. In his self-portrait of 1933 he represented himself in a traditional way — the only way permitted by Stalinist cultural policy — but signed the picture with a tiny black-over-white square.

“In 1941 Halsman met the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and they began to collaborate in the late 1940s. The 1948 work Dali Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three cats flying, a bucket of thrown water, and Salvador Dalí in mid air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí’s work Leda Atomica which can be seen in the right of the photograph behind the two cats. Halsman reported that it took 28 attempts to be satisfied with the result.“
